Overview

For more than 30 years, Waikīkī Health Center (WHC) has been serving the needs of its community.  Waikīkī Health Center’s mission is to provide high quality medical care and social services that are accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.  Waikīkī Health Center reaches out from the heart of Waikīkī to serve its community and all of Hawai‘i through unique on-site and outreach service programs.

 

Services

WHC provides the following medical care and outreach services:

  • Primary Care Medical Clinic—offering primary medical care without regard to a person’s ability to pay.  Includes care for chronic and acute conditions, family planning, pharmaceutical and lab services, immunizations and other care typically offered in general medical clinics.
  • Care-A-Van—bringing health and social services to the homeless in parks, beaches, or on the streets through medically equipped, professionally staffed vans.
  • Youth Outreach Project—Providing care to runaway, throwaway, and homeless youth through a drop-in center and adolescent clinic.  Open three days a week, this is a collaborative project with Hale Kipa Youth Services.
  • Ho‘ōla Like—three satellite clinics serve North Shore and Windward communities with primary medical care, traditional Native Hawaiian healing, and community outreach.
  • Friendly Neighbors—caring volunteers assist isolated elderly persons living in Waikīkī with companionship and activities such as grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments, reading mail, and more.
  • STD/HIV Services—full range of treatment and wellness services for persons infected with HIV.  Prevention education including:  statewide hotline (922-1313) for information about HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, and free and anonymous counseling and testing.
  • Native Hawaiian Healing—providing culturally appropriate Native Hawaiian healing practices including lomilomi, ho‘oponopono, and lā‘au lapa‘au.

 

Special Populations/Health Issues

Transient and uninsured, homeless, youth and adults.  Reflective of the population, the major issues are STD/HIV screening, prevention and counseling, pregnancy prevention, and the special problems of the homeless such as chemical dependency and mental illnesses.

Staffing

On its professional staff WHC has physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses, outreach and social service providers, and health educators.

 

Federal Funding

Waikīkī Health Center is the grantee or subcontractor for:

  • 330(h) Healthcare for the Homeless (subcontracts to Kalihi-Pālama Health Center, Community Clinic of Maui, and Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center)
  • Ryan White HIV Services (subcontracts to Community Clinic of Maui)
